History
Carstairs Capital Ltd was formed to pay tribute to the late Ronald Carstairs and his legacy and to highlight the achievements of his successful and prominent merchant banking career in Hong Kong and China.
Mr. Carstairs had worked in Hong Kong and China region for over 25 years with banks such as Standard Chartered, Dah Sing Bank and Citic Ka Wah Bank and was the chairman of the Bankers Association in HK and was a strong advocator for business in the Greater China region and called home Hong Kong even though he was Scottish born national.
Mr. Ronald Carstairs was a strong believer in the private equity business and encouraged all entrepreneurs and businessman to capitalize on the strengths of what Hong Kong and Mainland China had to offer and firmly believed that China in the next decade would become the next powerhouse economy taking over the United States and Europe.
Philosophy
Carstairs Capital focuses on investing in unlisted private Hong Kong/Macau companies, involved mainly in trading, services and information technology sectors. These are usually businesses managed by the founders/shareholders, who have a very strong commitment to the success of the business, and are very pro-active about continuous improvement.
Many of the companies, which choose to receive an investment from us, plan to list on Hong Kong's stock exchange and want to implement improvements to their management systems so that they can become more competitive and grow more quickly.
Making only 4-5 investments per year, we are very selective about only investing in the most well managed private companies.
The most significant issue we consider when evaluating an investment is the capability and track record of the main shareholders and senior management team. We aim to invest in companies in which the key people:
- Are extraordinarily committed to the success of the company and not distracted by other businesses or priorities;
- Have a long-term perspective and are focused on creating shareholder value by reinvesting in the development of the company;
- Are committed to continuously strengthening the company's management team;
- Are highly committed to continuous improvement, and are open to working closely with Carstairs Capital to identify and implement improvements.
